Organisations on Mangroves and Corals

Resource Type: Organisations on Mangroves and Corals

MANGROVES

Global Mangrove Alliance

This is the largest alliance of over a hundred participating stakeholders including non-profit groups, governments, and ground-up community groups, in mangrove conservation and restoration. The alliance includes World Wildlife Fund, the Blue Carbon Initiative and Wetlands International. The aim is to coordinate efforts across the world to make mangrove care more effective and at a scale that matters. The website also includes helpful resources and decks that may be suitable for those who are interested in mangrove research and care work.

Yayasan Ecology Foundation

This organisation carries out various programs that have a direct impact on environmental conservation and community empowerment, such as mangrove planting activities, sea  turtle conservation, and support in the management of the marine protected areas.

Konservasi Indonesia

The organisation bridges between the Indonesian Government, local communities, businesses and other stakeholders to support sustainable development in Indonesia. They do this through programmes that conserve nature spaces as well as fisheries and marine resources.

Re-peat

Stared in 2020 as a group of enthusiastic youth in Europe, this group aims to use creative means to advocate for another type of wetlands, known as peatlands. They are currently a group of 20 members.

CORALS

Cempedak Private Island & The Long Run, Sustainable Tourism & Marine Conservation (Bintan, Indonesia)

Cempedak Private Island, located off the coast of Bintan in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, is an eco-tourism resort and member of The Long Run, a global network promoting sustainability in tourism. Through partnerships with organizations such as Conservation International, the project has supported the establishment of a 138,500-hectare Marine Protected Area around Bintan, helping protect coral reefs and other marine ecosystems while supporting local communities.

Conservation International, Marine Conservation in Indonesia (Including Bintan)

Conservation International is a global environmental organization that works to protect nature while supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities. In Indonesia, the organization collaborates closely with its national partner Konservasi Indonesia to conserve critical ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and fisheries, while promoting sustainable economic development.

CORDAP (Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform)

CORDAP is a global initiative launched by the G20 in 2020 to accelerate research and innovation aimed at protecting and restoring coral reefs worldwide. It supports international collaborations between scientists, conservation organizations, and local practitioners to develop new technologies and scalable solutions for coral conservation and restoration in the face of climate change and other environmental pressures.CORDAP funds research projects, pilot restoration techniques, and capacity-building programs around the world, particularly in regions where coral reefs are most biodiverse and threatened. This includes Indonesia, which lies within the Coral Triangle, the global center of coral reef biodiversity. Through initiatives such as research grants and local innovation programs, CORDAP helps support scientific monitoring, restoration methods, and training networks that strengthen coral conservation efforts across Indonesian reefs.

COSMARINDO (Coral Spawning Monitoring and Awareness Network for Indonesia)

COSMARINDO is a coral restoration initiative in Indonesia that focuses on improving reef restoration through scientific monitoring, training, and education. The project builds a nationwide network of students and researchers from Indonesian universities to monitor coral spawning events and collect data that supports more effective restoration practices. The program also provides workshops and training in coral identification, spawning monitoring, and sustainable restoration methods, helping strengthen local capacity for long-term reef conservation.

International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), Global Partnership for Coral Reef Conservation

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is a global partnership between governments, international organizations, NGOs, and scientific institutions working to protect coral reefs and related marine ecosystems worldwide. Established in 1994, the initiative promotes international cooperation, knowledge sharing, and best practices for the sustainable management, conservation, and restoration of coral reefs. Through policy guidance, scientific collaboration, and capacity-building programs, ICRI helps raise global awareness about the importance of coral reefs for marine biodiversity, food security, coastal protection, and community livelihoods.

Indonesia Coral Reef Bond (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia)

The Indonesia Coral Reef Bond is an innovative outcome-based financial bond developed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) together with partners including the World Bank, Global Environment Facility (GEF), BNP Paribas, and IUCN. The initiative channels international and private investment into coral reef conservation in Indonesia’s marine protected areas (MPAs). The bond supports conservation actions such as improved monitoring, sustainable fisheries management, and protection of reef ecosystems across around 1.9 million hectares of coral reefs. By linking financial returns to measurable ecological outcomes, such as increases in reef fish biomass, it represents a new model of ''blue finance'' for protecting Indonesia’s globally important coral reef ecosystems.

Orang Laut SG

Orang Laut SG is a community-led digital platform dedicated to documenting and sharing the heritage, stories, and traditions of the Orang Laut (“sea people”) and Orang Pulau communities connected to Singapore’s southern islands. The initiative began as a grassroots project in 2020, led by descendants of island communities such as Pulau Semakau, to preserve memories of maritime life and cultural practices that risk being forgotten. Through storytelling, events, food traditions, and community activities, the platform highlights the history, identity, and everyday life of sea-faring communities in the Singapore–Riau maritime region, emphasizing their deep cultural connections to the sea and island environments.

The Island Foundation, learning centers (Bintan)

The Island Foundation (TIF) is a Singapore-based non-profit organization that works to strengthen education and sustainability in small island and coastal communities across Indonesia. Founded in 2010, the foundation runs programs that support children, teachers, and families through community-based learning focused on environmental awareness, critical thinking, and practical life skills. A key part of its work takes place on Bintan Island in the Riau Archipelago, where TIF operates a network of Learning Centres in coastal villages. These centres provide extracurricular education, teacher training, and community activities that connect local children with topics such as marine environments, sustainability, and island livelihoods. The program aims to improve learning opportunities while helping young people build skills to support the long-term resilience of their coastal communities.
