MANGROVES
Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration
Available in English, Bahasa Indonesia and multiple other languages, this manual consolidates best practices for mangrove restoration, and offers step-by-step guidance for practitioners from design, gathering funds, and implementation.
It is jointly published by Global Mangrove Alliance, Blue Carbon Initiative, led by University of Queensland, Conservation International, Wetlands International, Blue Marine Foundation, and the International Blue Carbon Institute. Dozens of scientific experts and users were also engaged in the development of this manual.
Community-based Mangrove Planting Handbook for Papua New Guinea
This handbook was published in 2018 as an initiative of the Papua New Guinean government to provide direct, step-by-step guide on how to rehabilitate mangroves. Though it is not set in the Riau, it may be a useful reference for practitioners who are involved with mangrove rehabilitation work.
Blue Carbon Ecosystems in Indonesia: An Action Guide
Published by the Global Green Growth Institute, this guide contains infographics that explains the mechanics behind blue carbon market ecosystem, the multiple stakeholder groups involved, flowcharts on the monetisation scheme for carbon, and a list of laws and regulations in Indonesia on Blue Carbon trading.
This book published in 1997 was the first significant attempt to provide an overview of mangrove distribution across the world. It includes case studies and maps of mangroves in different parts of the world.
CORALS
Coral Reef Restoration Guidelines (by ICRI)
This guide by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) provides an overview of the main methods and principles used in coral reef restoration. It explains common restoration techniques and offers practical guidance for practitioners, researchers, and communities working to support reef recovery and long-term coral conservation.
Mengkaji Dengan Hati: A Toolkit on Research Ethics by Orang Laut SG
This ethical research toolkit developed by Orang Laut SG offers practical guidelines for researchers, journalists, and storytellers working with coastal and Indigenous communities. It aims to promote equitable partnerships, respectful engagement, and community-centered research practices, helping avoid extractive approaches to local knowledge and heritage.
Monitoring Reef Conditions, UNESCO Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Guide
This UNESCO publication provides guidance on monitoring coral reef ecosystems and reef health, explaining methods used to assess reef conditions, environmental changes, and human impacts. Developed as part of UNESCO’s coastal and marine research programmes, the guide introduces scientific approaches to observing coral reefs, including field surveys and ecological monitoring. The guide is useful for researchers, conservation practitioners, and coastal managers because it helps build baseline knowledge about coral reef conditions, supporting better management and protection of reef ecosystems worldwide, including in biodiversity-rich regions such as Indonesia and the Coral Triangle.
Coral Reef Restoration Handbook
Edited by William F. Precht, it is a comprehensive scientific handbook that examines the theory, methods, and challenges of restoring damaged coral reef ecosystems. The book brings together contributions from experts in marine biology, geology, engineering, and coastal management to outline practical strategies for reef assessment, restoration design, implementation, and monitoring.
